BiographyErnst Barlach was born in Wedel an der Niederelbe on January 2, 1870 and he died in Rostock on October 24, 1938. His art studies included time in Paris in 1895 and 1897, including time at the Académie Julian. In 1904, he began teaching ceramics at the Vocational School for Pottery in Höhr-Grenzhausen in Westerwald. In 1909, Barlach spent ten months in Florence. In 1910, he settled in Gustrow, Mecklenburg. Initially a strong supporter of World War I, he initially served voluntarily in the military, but in 1915, he became a total pacifist. In 1919, he was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. During the twenties, Barlach created many anti-war sculptures. Barlach’s works were confiscated in 1936 and he was forbidden to work. Some of his works were included in the 1937 “Degenerate Art” exhibition.
