Hans Christiansen

BiographyHans Christiansen was born in Flensburg in 1866 and died in Wiesbaden in 1945. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and then work in an interior decorating shop in Hamburg, Christiansen studied in Munich and Italy and he visited Chicago in 1893. From 1896-99, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Christiansen created several covers and frequently contributed art to the Munich cultural weekly journal Jugend (Youth), founded in 1896; its title was the source of the term ‘jugendstil’). His cover designs and his graphic advertisements made him famous. He received a professorship in 1898 and was a member of the Kunstlerkolonie, staying in Darmstadt until 1902. Christiansen was banned from painting in 1933 by the National Socialists.
